My background is as a General Manager with extensive experience in IT Operations and Development Team Management. My particular skills are structuring teams to do the job properly, in establishing within teams leadership, structures and business processes that deliver successful projects and in planning, managing, mentoring and leading the people that contribute to those projects. Behind me I have extensive knowledge of the technical side of IT and a long and successful career in delivering successful outcomes for businesses. I know that in all projects there will be challenges and problems to overcome but I have the experience and personality together with a composed approach that enables me to find solutions and move forward.
I was born and raised in Wellington and apart from 2 years at Intermediate Boarding school and 4 years overseas for work reasons, I have lived here all my life. My secondary education was at Wellington College followed by studies at Victoria University from which I have a BSc (Hons) in Botany which followed undergraduate studies in the broader Earth Science areas. After graduation I taught in the Botany Department at Victoria University for a while while continuing studies but then changed careers completely moving into Development with Databank.
I spent the next 8 years programming, almost exclusively in the areas of Forex, Banking and Treasury, working on a range of projects utilising a broad set of tools. I enjoyed this time because it provided the opportunity to plan and deliver software for people who needed it. However, I found that I was steadily being drawn into People oriented roles and the businesses I worked for were quick to give me opportunities to lead and organise. I then moved into Operations focussing on IT infrastructure and Telecommunications and then into Management running teams that developed and supported software and operational groups supporting both internal and external clients. From there my career took me overseas to run Asia Pacific for a UK based multi-national and then into a role restructuring Development Centres. For the last 8 years I have been involved with Start Ups in operational general management and project management and as an executive and non-executive Director on two Boards.
During these last 10 years, the majority of my life outside of work has been family focussed running around after my twin girls. Our particular interests are having fun on Lake Taupo, sports of all kinds but particularly water sports and a range of other simple but fun activities. I also enjoy Golf but struggle to fit it in on a regular basis, the New Zealand bush, Opera and live theatre, non fiction reading and sport of all kinds. I have been married to Liz for 14 years. Her occupation is as a Nurse working in Cardiac Care and carrying out mobile medicals for Insurance purposes. Our family enjoys living in Wellington, a compact but vibrant city.
